RE: WAITING PERIOD NOT WAIVED FOR EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE COVERAGE DURING LAY-OFF
We have recently received clarification from Service Canada regarding eligibility of the waved waiting period for Employment Insurance payments. They are saying that ONLY those Employees that were/are under isolation/quarantine because of exhibiting symptoms of the virus and/or were travelling outside the Country will be eligible for the one week waiting period to be waived.
Unfortunately, Employees that are being “temporarily laid-off”, simply due to a slowdown or lack of work, caused by COVID-19, are NOT ELIGIBLE for the waiting period to be waived through the application for Employment Insurance Benefits.
Employees that “chose” to self-isolate/quarantine out of concern, but did not exhibit any of the symptoms may or may not be eligible for the one week waiting period to be waived.
If you have not done so already, please “pre-register” for your Employment Insurance from Service Canada as soon as possible. Please by-pass the mass lay-off section and continue to the individual registration. Unfortunately, you will not be able to “fully” register until the Record of Employments (ROE) are issued electronically to Service Canada by Guelph Manufacturing and then Service Canada will issue each Employee a code to activate their claim.
ROE’s: We are experiencing some delays with the governments online ROE system as it is being overloaded with requests at this time. We are however, remaining diligent in processing them as quickly as we can. As of this writing we are approximately 50% complete. We are still hopeful of meeting our goal and be complete by March 26, 2020.
We wish all our Employees and their Families a safe time off during this challenging period.
